Aurora, CO

Aurora is the city in Colorado. The city was founded in the 1880s, originally bore the name of Fletcher in honor of Denver businessman, Donald Fletcher. In 1907, the residents decided to rename the city Aurora. Under this name, the city was incorporated in 1929. The city began to grow slowly in the shadow of Denver, becoming the fastest growing city in the late 1970s-early 1980s. Since the beginning of the XX century, the military presence started noticeably growing. Fitzsimons Army Hospital was opened in 1918, and in 1941 there was the expansion and modernization of premises of medical institutions. This was done on time, as it was necessary to care for the wounded soldiers of the Second World War. In 1938, the Lowry Air Force base was opened, located on the border of Aurora and Denver. In the 1942 year in this area, the army aviation corps was built Buckley Air Force Base, which is today the largest employer of the city. Although Aurora has long been regarded by many only as a major suburb of Denver, population growth in recent decades has led to the city being recognized as equal with its major neighbor. It is interesting to note that in 1965, mayor Norma O. Walker became the first woman to head the city of the United States with a population of over 60,000 people. Candidate for President of the United States John Kerry was born in Aurora.
