Worcester is the second largest city in Massachusetts, after Boston. The city is located in the center of the state, on the west bank of the Lake Quinsigamond, and it is the center of the District Worcester. The city has several nicknames: The Heart of the Commonwealth, City of Seven Hills, Wormtown and The Woo. Before the arrival of the European settlers, the Native American tribe of Nipmuc lived in the Worcester. In 1673 Daniel Gukin and John Eliot have brought people for the foundation of the Christian settlement. Getters and fur dealers were the first settlers. "King Philip's War" has soon run high, and the settlement has been ruined and left. New counting of history of the city has begun in 1705 at the initiative of Jonas Rice. Then the settlement has received the name in honor of the English Worcester. And residents have immortalized Jonas Rice subsequently, having established a memorial stone on the place of his house. Modern Worcester is the large regional center of health care. There are a Medical University and several research centers and clinics. Medical institutions are the chief employers of the city.
