High Dunes Retreat - Perched high atop sand dunes overlooking the Gulf of Mexico and Dauphin Island beach, this private retreat with all the modern amenities has sweeping sea views and world class sunsets. The home is outfitted with broad window walls that accentuate the outdoor vistas. Expansive porches, lined with rocking chairs, capture gentle ocean breezes and invite quiet reading or conversations and romantic sunset dining. You feel totally immersed in nature.
Enjoy the fragile sand dune landscape and expect daily visits from the island’s unique water fowl (Dauphin Island is a designated bird sanctuary.) A short walk takes you to a well maintained public beach and a two mile stretch of undeveloped seashore which guards the eastern approach of this secluded barrier island and is home to an annual turtle migration.
High Dunes features seven bedrooms and five full bathrooms with an open floor plan perfect for large groups and reunions. The oversize living room is furnished in modern decor with three full size sofas, four arm chairs, two reading nooks and a fireplace with gas logs. The South (beachside) is a window wall that opens onto a porch with teak rocking chairs, panoramic views of the gulf and an outdoor shower. A large chef’s kitchen features a breakfast bar, an island with sink, two wall ovens, a six burner stove top, a French door fridge with ice and water dispenser and a stand-alone wine and beer cooler. The property has full internet access, a new 65” smart TV with a Blue Ray DVD player and TV’s and DVD’s in every bedroom. The house features art collected from the family’s travels and a large and eclectic film and reading library. High Dunes has all your creature comforts covered. You can also rent the house adjacent to High Dunes, we call is The Bird's Nest, for an additional charge. The two houses are connected with a deck. (Ask about the Bird's Nest if you need extra room for friends and family)
Dauphin Island is a charming island community that still has an active fishing fleet, a small grocery store, gift shops, a bakery, restaurants and an art gallery. The town also boasts historic Fort Gaines, Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Estuarium, and an Audubon Bird Sanctuary. There is no need to drive with a bike trail that runs the length of the island. The Mobile Bay ferry runs regularly between Fort Gaines and Fort Morgan, the old civil war forts guarding the Bay (Damn the torpedoes full speed ahead!) providing travelers access to Fort Morgan, and more populous sites on the eastern side of Mobile Bay including Gulf shores, Daphne, and Fairhope.
The island is home to number of events and festivals including the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, the Sailboat Regatta, the Battle of Mobile Bay celebration, and the Alabama Coastal Bird Fest along with Mardi Gras parades, seafood festivals, fun runs and art and craft shows. Dauphin Island offers a range of water sports, fishing charters and sunset cruises.
Escape the throngs and take advantage of the best kept secret on America’s gulf coast.
Relax and savor the gentle ocean breezes while sipping your coffee on a spacious front porch. Listen to the calls of the Morning Doves and watch the Pelicans and Blue Herons coast gracefully over the gulf.
Our family fell in love with Dauphin Island in the eighties and built our vacation retreat.
