Elegantly renovated, St Mary’s Gardens II has given period charm a modern makeover. From the entrance at street level, step left from the hallway into the sitting room. It’s elegant, with glossy original floorboards and restored cornicing. The walls are soothing in duck-egg blue, and a classical bust and Victorian fireplace (ornamental only) are prime examples of careful craftsmanship. Straight ahead from the entrance is the office, its walls papered in vintage maps. Downstairs, the farmhouse-style kitchen, with a table for four and another restored ornamental fireplace.
The paved garden is through the doors beyond the dining area, and the bathroom is up on the first floor – its walk-in shower contrasting coolly with an ornate gilded mirror. Head up again to find the double bedroom to the right and the master straight ahead. Both are powder blue, but the double’s pairing of mirrored bedside tables with a retro telephone makes the most lasting impression.
