Step over the threshold for admission to what feels like the art world’s inner sanctum: Petersham Place is home to an extraordinary exhibition. So, escaping the museum crowds, duck into this secluded mews, secreted a short stroll from Gloucester Road and Hyde Park. Even though you’re surrounded by world-famous museums and galleries, it’s here that you can enjoy exclusive access to an intriguing collection of portraits, landscapes, sculptures and exquisite antiques.
In the frame
Your hosts are committed art collectors who were won over by the house’s wonderful light and extensive wall space. South Kensington is their much-loved home for five months of the year, the remaining seven are spent in Perth, Australia.
Calm and collected
A quintessentially English mood is established at a front door on a cobbled street, flanked by perfectly pruned bay trees and statues of Chinese Fu Dogs. Upstairs, the double room has its own dressing area and the twin has a balcony overlooking the mews. But rather than debate sleeping arrangements you’ll be marvelling over the art. Downstairs, dine among the beautifully captured characters and scenes which line the walls or curl up on a comfy sofa and admire the sculptures, antique furniture and handwoven rugs that wouldn’t look out of place at the V&A. Art appreciation has never been so easy.
