A la mode
Walking the streets in Angel is like stepping back in time, so pristine are its Georgian terraces. St Peter’s Street itself is a perfect example, and even more intriguingly, this four bedroom, two bathroom townhouse, built in 1848, is one of only eight designed in Islington by architect Samuel Angell. Inside, the rooms are large, and drenched with sunlight from the sash windows, and the finish is beautiful throughout. If you can tear yourself away, wander the nearby streets and feast your eyes, or head to Camden Passage – an impossibly picturesque alleyway where antiques dealers have plied their trade for centuries.
Your French host is director of an eco-lodge company in Thailand, and enjoys the good life. She adores the combination of classic Georgian elegance and modern design in her London home, and has recently renovated this four storey sanctuary, decorating it with all her French sophistication.
Crème de la crème
Be whisked away by whimsy as soon as you grace St Peter’s Street with your presence. In the huge sitting room, admire the eclectic artwork on the walls and the two conceptual chandeliers, or raid the bookcase and settle in for an evening on the irresistibly-patterned sofa. Pad down to the stunning marble kitchen and dining room, where modern utilities meet original features, and enjoy a glass of rouge around the six seater dining table as you gaze out of the double doors at the paved garden.
When the day is done, make for the beautifully tiled bathroom, where a heated towel rack, deep bath and vanity mirror make for ultimate relaxation. Ready for a ramble? It’s time to explore the four generous bedrooms – two kings, a single and a double – each decorated with the same lux playfulness as the rest of the home. If you’ve got a head for heights, choose one of the quirky attic rooms.
Angel has one of the highest concentrations of high-end restaurants and boutiques in London, so mooch up bustling Upper Street and see what takes your fancy. If you’re up for a constitutional, enjoy the sprinkling of Garden Squares which nestle within the miles of stunning Georgian architecture. Angel is nearest tube station and is just an eight minute walk away.
