Russell is a small seaside town situated in the Bay of Islands. It is founded on a peninsula jutting out of the mainland and the perfect base for getting out on the water. With its rich marine wildlife (dolphin watching), clear blue water, secluded beaches, history and scenery, this area is one of our country’s most popular holiday destinations, and enjoys a fantastic subtropical climate. A comfortable 3 hour drive from Auckland, with great variety of visitor excursions, such as deep sea fishing and sailing around the beautiful islands (including Roberton island where Cook anchored in 1769)
Russell is also full of historical significance, originally called Kororareka. It was both one of the first permanent European settlements in New Zealand and the first site of New Zealand’s capital. From Russell you can visit the site of Waitangi, the location of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, which made New Zealand a British Colony
