This place had been recommended for us by friends who had recently stayed and we didn't regret the decision. Set in the beautiful Promised Land not far from Bellingen, the cottage is perched amongst green paddocks with a picturesque mountain range framing the view. The first thing we noticed was the quality of the build: no expense has been spared to create an organic piece of architecture that sits beautifully in the landscape. Just a short drive or bike ride around the corner you will find amazing water holes and pebbled river beds amongst the forest: a truly stunning natural environment.
The timber-work on the cabin is amazing and the paring down of interior 'distractions' lets the design shine. It's in the details, really it is and the thoughtfulness of the inclusions adds to the experience. There is something peaceful about this place, a place where you can totally relax with little more than the hum of a distant tractor.

If you're looking for a peaceful, quality rural retreat then this is it. Totally relaxing stay in a beautifully built cabin overlooking green paddocks and framed by equally stunning mountains. Two nights felt like a week! Thank you Sophie :)
We (family of 4 with 2 young teenage boys) visited in late September 2014. What a wonderful place to be ... I still have that vista in the forefront of my mind. The photos can only do so much justice. The accommodation itself was ideal... private, high quality and fit for the purpose. I have very fond memories of evenings playing board / card games with all of us happily engaged (a welcome departure from the world of gaming which often steals our boys away from us). Sophie and Greg were very welcoming and respected the privacy that such a location provides. In addition to all of this, the facilities were wonderful ... the tennis court (and lights) were brilliant. The bikes beautifully maintained and the expansive DVD library providing for that family movie night in paradise.
Best approach (as many have already hinted) is to stock up and stay in ... perhaps just venturing out to visit those nearby waterfalls.
It goes without saying that we enjoyed our visit immensely. I hope we return one day.

We spent a wonderful 2 nights here recently on our way back home after a long road trip. The arrival to the promised land is just what the website shows you, the setting is stunning and we never got tired of sitting on the deck looking at the view. Our two young children loved their time there and still talk about Alby and Zorro and miss them. The chalets are comfortable and have everything you need. Bellingen itself is a quirky and hip town and only a 10 minute drive away. We had a great time at the close swimming creeks and rode our bikes around, a great family spot in a beautiful part of the world.
If you're looking for a place of pure comfort while being ensconced in natural beauty and tranquility you certainly could not pass up Promised Land Retreat. The cottage was certainly well-appointed and offered beautiful views into the surrounding forest and mountains. The kind of view where you happily prefer to watch the clouds float past rather than the TV. So relaxing. The owners were very friendly and helpful with any enquiries. Loved our stay and would definitely return in the future.
A true escape from the hustle and bustle of larger centres. The cabins are beautifully constructed and appointed. Private and well positioned to take in views of the valley, the cabins are very relaxing. The valley seems to be full of native birds, with friendly kookaburras visiting the cabin each day.
Our time went quickly in the area - visiting the cafes and quaint main street of nearby Bellingen and exploring the natural beauty of nearby Dorrigo national park.
Sophie and Greg are the perfect hosts - friendly but not intrusive. We really enjoyed our time at the Promised Land and hope to visit again. We cannot speak highly enough of our stay.
Stayed in October 2014.
Melissa Dell – 5 starThis is truly a gorgeous venue where you can immerse yourself in the beauty and tranquility of nature. The timber chalets are amazing- the view even better!
Our hosts were lovely people and I cannot thank them enough for allowing my husband and I the opportunity to rest and rejuvenate amongst the beautiful landscape offered by the Promised Lands.
The pristine waters of Never Never Creek, the songs of the rainforest birds and the relaxed atmosphere of the Bellingen township are things I hope to recapture again very soon.
I thoroughly recommend staying at Promised Land Retreat!!!!!
' My wife and I stayed in one of your most excellent chalets for the 6 nights of our honeymoon and we would like to tell you how much we enjoyed it! The accommodation was elegant, private and so peaceful, all that we hoped for. You have such a pretty place and location. We spent some time in beautiful Bellingen, saw some great live music at The Cool Creek Cafe, went to Coffs, Urunga and Dorrigo as well, all very close. We had in fact had our eye on staying here since we saw the Sydney Morning Herald article from Aug 2002.
Being an Architect, I couldn't help but like the chalets, very impressive and the attention to detail was obvious. Lovingly made... '

In the Gourmet Traveller magazine Feb 2003, they say: ' The Promised Land Retreat offers no ordinary farmstay. On a 40ha property overlooking the mountains fringing the Dorrigo National Park, (three) self-contained timber chalets blend functional minimalism with deep comfort. Simple country pleasures combined with cosmopolitan luxury appear to be a hallmark of a valley visit.'
The property has also been reviewed on page 6 in the travel section of the Sydney Morning Herald - Aug 17th-18th 2002 and a rating of 17 out of 20 was awarded. Since then all the chalets have had reverse cycle air conditioning installed.
