Le Marais’ streets are a captivating blend of styles – the postmodernist Pompidou building stands alongside 17th century architecture. And past Rue Pavée’s gilded doors you’ll find a similar balance. Through the hallway, and beyond a set of double doors, parquet floors and soaring ceilings frame contemporary furnishings and a collection of modern art. But the formal sitting room offers the most striking contrasts – antique armchairs and an ornamental hearth are paired with a modular sofa, and there’s a state-of-the art Bang & Olufsen sound system.
Your hosts are both art lovers – it’s their passion and their profession – and the walls of Rue Pavée showcase their collection. They divide their time between Paris and New York, and enjoy sampling the restaurants and bars of both cities.
Ancient and modern
In Rue Pavée, artful antiques and abstract artworks are a surprising combination – in one room there’s a traditionally carved fireplace, and in another there’s an industrial-style side table. Find the terracotta-tiled ensuite, airy and inviting with twin sinks and a deep bathtub. Or head for the kitchen, which is colourful with sea-blue cabinets and a delicate table for two by the window. But before retreating to the understated master bedroom, dedicate some time to the cobbled streets outside. The Place des Vosges, the city’s oldest square, is minutes away, or wander to the banks of the Seine – they’re tastefully lit in the evening.
